Tyre Aging –The Last Word

November 30th, 2015

Among other matters the European Commission Roadworthiness Committee has been deliberating on the difficult question of tyre aging. Here is what they have to say.

“The overall conclusion was that the age of the tyres is not a good indication of tyre condition and therefore the link between tyre age and road safety cannot be established. Poor tyre condition is most often a result of inadequate (low) pressure, worn out rolling band (tread) or damage due to use.

In light of this factual information none of the experts expressed support for a limitation of tyre age or for the mandatory introduction of tyre age checks under the roadworthiness testing. Instead, more awareness of road users should be raised on adequate use, in particular keeping the correct pressure and adequate storage, to avoid premature tyre deterioration”

Fair and to the point, we think so?
