In recognition of its growing stature and representation within the global tyre industry, ITMA requested and was granted official ‘observer’ status to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) Working Party on Brakes and Running Gear (GRRF).
GRRF is a subcommittee of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP 29) that works for globally harmonized regulations on vehicles. GRRF prepares regulatory proposals on active safety, specifically on braking and running gear.
Indeed, European Commission legal and technical experts participate actively in GRRF work sessions, since all future vehicle and tyre specific regulations will be first agreed by the UNECE, to later be used as legal references for EU legislation. As a result of this, in the area of vehicle safety, European regulators will no longer build separate European legislation themselves, but reference the texts agreed in GRRF and WP29. The GRRF members consist if industry association legal and technical experts working together with national legal authorities from the participating countries.
As an observer, ITMA’s participation will be limited to a consultative capacity which will ensure the Association is present and fully informed when all regulations are discussed and decisions made.
